Listed here are seven venues from across the country in 2016, which all have their own unique way of celebrating what is without doubt one of the Kingdoms most enchanting of festivals.

Thailand Loy Krathong. Loy Krathong  (or Loi Krathong), is a colourful, joyful festival and is held every year on the full moon of the twelfth month in the Thai lunar calendar. The Festival is held all over the country, as well as in neighbouring  Myanmar (Shan State) where it is known as Tazaungdaing, and in Laos, where it is known as Lai Heua Fai.

Phra Nakhon District– River Festival & Firework Display

Where: Suan Nakarapirom in Phra Nakhon District Bangkok

In Bangkok, the Chao Phraya River is the centre of this year’s Loi Krathong celebration. During the three-day event, visitors will be transported back in time to Thailand’s long and colourful past, with people dressed in the traditional Thai costumes. There will be all manner of fun activities and cultural shows, along with a mass of booths demonstrating Thai cultural products, traditional performances as well as Loi Krathong exhibition.

On the night of 14th November, there will be an illuminated boat procession which will start from Krung Thep Bridge towards Rama 8 Bridge and then finish at Nakarapirom Park. Other activities also include firework display, Loi Kratong interactive exhibition & display, demonstration of making Kratong, demonstration of Thai cuisine and Thai dessert making, plus a range of cultural shows.

Also on the same night a number of temples and communities along the Chao Phraya River will have their own festivities with numerous fun-filled performances and live entertainment. The evening is finished off at 22:00 hrs with an amazing fireworks display over the Chao Phraya River.

Tak Province – Tak Loi Krathong Sai Festival

Where: Bank of the Ping River Tak Province Northern Thailand

Tak province will celebrate the annual Loi Krathong Sai. Throughout the six-day event, visitors will get the chance to experience the floating of Krathong Sai, along with a light-and-sound presentation, a fireworks display and numerous cultural performances and contests.

Yi Peng or Lantern Festival is Chiang Mai’s own version of Loi Krathong. This year, there will be Kratong contest with the winners taking the Royal Trophy of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Other activities include colourful parades, musical performances, beauty pageants, traditional dances, lantern-making contests, fireworks, and of course lots of food. Sukhothai Loi Krathong and Candle Festival

Where: The Ancient City of Sukhothai. Sukhothai Province Northern Thailand

Attractions include a light and sound show, spectacularly portraying the legend of this lovely festival of lights. Other events taking place during festival include a Khan Toke dinner, (is a traditional Northern way of serving food using a red pedestal tray which has Lanna food presented on it. It is traditional to eat the food using your bare hands.) There is also a display of ancient working Sukhothai market and the traditional Thai ways of life, a Kratong competition, beauty pageants, Thai classical music and cultural performances plus a huge firework display. Ratchaburi – Si and Loi Krathong Sai Mon

Where: Ratchaburi Central Thailand

Local people of Ratchaburi have their own unique way of celebrating Loi Krathong. According to the traditional belief of the ethnic Mon people, on this glorious night, they light candles around the temple’s bot and viharn buildings as if giving new blessings to life, this is followed by the floating of krathongs made from colourful papers which takes place at Wat Sai Areerak on Chokchai Road, Photharam District. Another venue for Loi Krathong celebration is at Wat Ban Muang in Ban Pong District where visitors can see the traditional Mon style of Loi Krathong Sai, along with other activities such as Junior Noppamas beauty contest and cultural shows.
